
Rutilated quartz refers to any variety of quartz that contains inclusions of rutile needles within the stone. Rutile is a mineral composed of titanium dioxide that commonly forms in slender, rod-like crystals. The rutile inclusions in rutilated quartz can form in different colors like silvery gray, reddish brown, or most prized, metallic gold. The rutile needles embedded within the clear to whitish quartz make for dramatic visual effects and interesting optical properties.
Rutilated quartz can occur in many color varieties of quartz like smoky quartz, citrine, amethyst, or rock crystal. But black rutilated quartz, also known as black titanium quartz, is one of the most highly valued forms. The contrast of the thin rutile needles against the black quartz background provides intense visual impact.
What Causes the Black Color?
Naturally occurring black rutilated quartz gets its deep black color from microscopic inclusions of minerals like hematite, magnetite, or titanium. These various mineral inclusions give the stone a very dense black color that provides the perfect backdrop for the golden rutile needles. The blackness also improves the optical effects of the rutile inclusions, allowing them to sparkle and stand out more dramatically.
The rutile inclusions begin forming when a titanium-rich fluid seeps into fractures and cavities within the quartz. As the titanium dioxide crystallizes into rutile needles, the surrounding quartz provides a nourishing environment for the rutile crystals to grow and thrive. This natural process can produce densely rutiled quartz containing many thousands of rutile needles within a single stone.
Why Black Rutilated Quartz is Untreated
While treatments like heat, radiation, dyeing, and coating can alter the color and appearance of many gemstones, black rutilated quartz is almost always completely untreated. That's because the manufacturing processes used to produce synthetic rutile or enhance it's color are not commercially viable for rutilating quartz.
The dense, near-black color and golden rutile inclusions occur naturally without any human enhancement. In fact, because the rutile is formed from trace minerals present in the quartz, man-made synthesis or treatment would be extremely difficult and costly. There is simply no easy way to artificially produce the beautiful patterning seen in black rutilated quartz.
Some black rutilated quartz may be fracture-filled with resin to improve durability. But reputable gem dealers will disclose any fracture filling or other treatments. Unaltered, natural black rutilated quartz is highly prized by collectors and commands premium prices. So there is little incentive for treatment beyond the rare occasional fracture filling.
So, the intense color and beautiful golden rutile inclusions that make black rutilated quartz so desirable are almost always the result of pure natural processes. This exquisite and unique gem remains one of the few quartz varieties that can be found in complete untreated form.
