Amethyst is associated with spirituality, intuition, peace, and wisdom. Over time, amethyst can absorb negative energy from its environment which needs to be cleansed. Cleansing and charging amethyst is easy to do at home with some simple methods. Below are several techniques you can use to keep your amethyst crystals cleansed, charged, and working at their highest vibration.
Salt Water Bath
One of the easiest ways to cleanse amethyst is with a salt water bath. The salt works to remove any built up negativity while the water energizes and recharges the stone. Simply fill a glass bowl or container with warm water and mix in a tablespoon or two of Himalayan pink salt or sea salt. Ensure the water is warm, not hot. Place your amethyst into the salt bath and allow it to soak for at least an hour. Rinse the crystals under cool running water and allow them to air dry completely before using or storing them. The longer the crystals soak, the more deep and thorough the cleansing will be. Repeat this cleansing process as needed.
Smudging
Smudging with sacred smoke is another excellent way to cleanse your amethyst. Many types of herbs can be used for smudging, but common ones are white sage, palo santo, and sweetgrass. To smudge the crystals, light the end of a dried bundle of herbs and let the flame go out so it produces smoke. Hold the crystals in the smoke, making sure the smoke touches all sides of the stones for at least 30 seconds on each side. You can also place the amethyst in a bowl or container and hold the smoke over and around the crystals. Fan the smoke to keep it moving around the stones. Smudging clears away negative energy and creates a clean slate to charge the amethyst.
Moonlight
Placing amethyst out under the light of the full moon is a more gentle but very effective method of cleansing. The light and energy of the moon will naturally clear away any built up vibrations while infusing the stones with bright lunar energy. Place your crystals on a windowsill or outdoors overnight during a full moon or over the course of 3 nights during a new moon. Bring the crystals back indoors in the morning and they are cleansed, charged, and ready to use.
Crystal Cluster
Clusters of amethyst points cleanse each other through a symbiotic energy resonance. Simply place your amethyst among an amethyst cluster or with other amethyst crystals of any shape and size. Leave them together for at least 4 hours so they can balance each other's energies. Separate the crystals and they will be cleansed and vibrating at a higher frequency. Leaving them in the cluster long term will amplify their energy.
Reiki
If you have experience with Reiki healing, you can use Reiki energy to effectively cleanse and charge amethyst. During a Reiki session, the universal energy flows through you and into the stones. Your own breath is another simple tool you have to cleanse amethyst. Hold the stones in your hands or place them in front of you. Take some deep cleansing breaths in through your nose and powerfully blow the air out through your mouth directed at the crystals. Visualize your breath blowing away toxic energy and see the stones soaking in pure, radiant light with each inhalation. Continue breathwork on the crystals for 5-10 minutes.
Earth Burial
Burying amethyst in the earth for a period will allow the soil to absorb impurities and renew the stones with earth energy. Place the crystals in a hole in your garden, flower pot, or yard. Cover with soil and leave them buried for 1-2 weeks. When you unearth them, wipe away any dirt and the crystals will be cleansed and charged. This is best done when the earth is most active in spring and summer.
Charging Amethyst
Once cleansed, there are additional ways to further charge and amplify your amethyst:
- Leave in bright sunlight for 4-8 hours
- Bury in a bowl of dried rice for 24 hours
- Place on top of rose quartz or clear quartz geode overnight
- Meditate with the stones, visualizing white or purple light flooding them
- Keep in room with live plants
- Wear the amethyst jewelry or place stones in your pocket for a day
