
Libyan Desert Glass is found spread out over thousands of square kilometers in a remote and harsh environment known as the Great Sand Sea in western Egypt and eastern Libya. This area is part of the larger Libyan Desert, which covers around 1.1 million square kilometers and spans Egypt, Libya, Sudan and Chad. The conditions here are extremely hot, dry and sandy, making survival difficult for humans and animals.
Yet somehow this magical golden-yellow glass has managed to form and persist in this unforgiving landscape. The translucent glass pieces typically range from pea-sized up to a couple inches, though larger pieces are occasionally found. They are angular and jagged, clearly formed from rapidly cooling molten material. Their composition includes a mixture of silicon dioxide and small amounts of other minerals like iron, magnesium and sodium.
The origin of Libyan Desert Glass has been debated since geologists first described its discovery in the early 1900s. Early theories proposed an ancient meteorite impact, volcanic eruption or atmospheric airburst as potential causes. However, there is no definitive evidence of an impact crater, volcanic remnants or other supportive features typically associated with those events.
The prevailing theory today suggests that the glass formed when a comet or meteorite exploded above the surface around 29 million years ago during the Oligocene epoch. As it streaked through the atmosphere, the intense friction and pressure caused it to heat up and explosively fragment mid-air, instantly melting and raining molten droplets down over the desert sands below. The droplets cooled so rapidly in the arid climate that they vitrified into glass. Over millions of years, these glasses have been scattered by wind and sandstorms across the barren sandy plains where chunks are still found today.
Due to its speculated cosmic origins and alluring beauty, Libyan Desert Glass has held intrigue for locals, travelers and scientists alike. The ancient Egyptians even used it in King Tut's famous golden death mask. Today it remains a popular, though rare, attraction for geologists and meteorite hunters visiting this corner of the Sahara. Only small amounts can be collected since removal is prohibited from certain protected areas within the region. For now, the striking golden glass remains mostly undisturbed in the same Egyptian and Libyan desert locations where it remarkably formed nearly 30 million years ago.
