With its distinctive soft pink hue, rose quartz is one of the most recognizable gemstones. But where does this rosy gem come from? Here is an overview of where rose quartz is naturally found around the world.
Brazil
Brazil is the largest producer of natural rose quartz in the world. The Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Bahia contain abundant deposits of rose quartz found in pegmatite formations. The area around the city of Governador Valadares in Minas Gerais has yielded exceptional pieces of gem-quality rose quartz over the years. One massive chunk unearthed in Brazil in the early 2000s weighed an astonishing 137 metric tons!
Madagascar
The island of Madagascar off the coast of southeastern Africa is another leading source of natural rose quartz. Deposits are found near the eastern coast around the town of Mananjary. Madagascan rose quartz often exhibits very fine clarity and color.
United States
In the United States, the principal source of natural rose quartz is South Dakota. The mineral is found predominantly on Mount Ida in the Black Hills region. Rose quartz crystals are embedded in abundant pegmatite deposits across the granite mountain. South Dakota produces a significant share of the world's rose quartz. Other minor deposits have been found in some eastern states.
Canada
Natural rose quartz has been found at a few sites in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Québec. Pegmatite formations in eastern Ontario and western Québec have yielded some specimens. However, Canadian rose quartz is not a major source for the gemstone market.
Other Countries
Beyond the major producers, smaller deposits of natural rose quartz occur in other parts of the world. In Europe, rose quartz is found in granite pegmatites in Germany, Ireland, France, and other countries. In Asia, limited quantities have been mined in countries like Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Kazakhstan. But the rose quartz from these minor sources is not nearly as substantial in quantity or quality as material from Brazil and Madagascar.
