Where Does Blue Kyanite Come From?

Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral with the chemical formula Al2SiO5. It is formed when aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks are subjected to high pressures but relatively low temperatures during metamorphism. The name kyanite comes from the Greek word "kuanos" meaning deep blue, referring to its typical blue color.

Blue kyanite is a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is suitable for most jewelry. Because of its strongly anisotropic nature, cutting kyanite can be challenging. The gems are best cut along the long axis to maximize the saturation of the blue color. Popular cuts include emerald cuts, trillion cuts, rounds, ovals, and pear shapes.
