Unlike clear quartz, which is found abundantly all over the world, the origins of strawberry quartz have remained shrouded in mystery. So where does this rare and magical crystal come from?
Brazil: The First Source
The earliest known strawberry quartz came from Minas Gerais, Brazil in the early 1990s. Some sources even refer to it as "Brazilian ruby quartz." These first strawberry quartz samples displayed a stunning deep pinkish-red color and came from granite deposits. For a while, Brazil was the only known source of strawberry quartz, making it highly prized and valuable.
Madagascar: The Modern Source
In the 2000s, new strawberry quartz deposits were discovered in Madagascar. Madagascan strawberry quartz tends to be lighter pink in color, with more translucent clarity than the Brazilian stones. Madagascar has since become the main supplier of strawberry quartz on the market today. Most strawberry quartz sold by crystal shops now comes from Madagascar.
Other Sources: A Matter of Debate
There is debate around other localities that allegedly produce strawberry quartz. Some sources claim it has been found in India and Pakistan. Others report rare discoveries in the U.S., Poland, and Australia. But because many stone dealers do not disclose their full sources, it's hard to verify these additional origins.
One source of confusion is stones labeled as "strawberry quartz" that actually appear more pinkish-orange than red. True strawberry quartz is defined by its distinctive deep reddish or pinkish-red tones. Diluting the definition makes it hard to pin down all the locations strawberry quartz is unearthed.
Why Is Strawberry Quartz So Rare?
Transparent quartz gets its color from trace amounts of other minerals present during formation. The mineral inclusion responsible for strawberry quartz's red color is likely hematite, chromium, or lithium. These coloring agents must be present in just the right concentrations to produce that signature strawberry quartz shade.
Most clear quartz forms from fluids inside granite or sandstone. But the conditions that lead to colored varieties like strawberry quartz arising are exceptionally rare. That's why huge quartz deposits typically yield only tiny pockets of strawberry quartz. Finding sizable pieces is like discovering treasure—hard to predict and incredibly exciting!
