
Lapis lazuli forms through a complex geological process that takes place over millions of years. The ingredients for lapis lazuli include the minerals lazurite, calcite, and pyrite. Lazurite is the main blue mineral that gives lapis its iconic color. Calcite provides the white inclusions, and pyrite gives it the sparkly gold flecks.
Lapis lazuli is only found in a few places on Earth where these minerals came together in just the right way. The main sources are in Afghanistan, Chile, Russia, and Pakistan.
The process starts when limestone rich in calcite and dolomite is buried deep in the Earth's crust. As it descends to depths of several kilometers, intense heat and pressure cause the limestone to metamorphose. This recrystallizes the calcite into new minerals like diopside, forsterite, and lazurite. The presence of silica and sulfur are also key in facilitating these mineral transformations.
At the same time, igneous rocks like granite may also be buried and metamorphosed nearby. As they are heated, minerals like pyrite crystallize out. Finally, after millions of years, tectonic forces push the rocks containing lazurite, calcite, and pyrite back up toward the surface. Fractures and faults allow mineral-rich fluids to pass through, depositing the ingredients for lapis lazuli in layers and veins.
The final result is the rare, vividly blue lapis lazuli that can be mined from these sites of geologic activity. While most lapis deposits are found in marble, the presence of the blue lazurite is critical. Lazurite is a feldspathoid silicate mineral that forms at high pressure and low temperatures, giving lapis its prized saturation of blue. The white calcite and brassy pyrite add visual contrasts.
The best quality lapis lazuli is an intense blue with few white calcite veins or pyrite spots. Lower grades may be paler or contain more calcite. Lapis lazuli that forms in layers rather than solid blocks is also considered less valuable.
In the end, the merging of metamorphic and igneous activity deep underground produces the enticing blue and gold swirls of lapis lazuli. Pressures over many millions of years turn ordinary limestone into this gemstone that has decorated Pharaohs, Mughal rulers, and ancient Americans.
