Does Jade Stone Glow in the Dark?

Jade is commonly associated with healing properties and good fortune. Some varieties of jade exhibit a lovely glow, which leads some people to wonder – does jade stone glow in the dark?

The brief answer is no, jade does not naturally glow in the dark. While some minerals like fluorite exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet light, jade does not have phosphorescent properties that cause it to glow after exposure to light.

However, there are a few factors that contribute to the misconception that jade glows in the dark. First, jade can reflect light, creating an eye-catching shine. When light hits the surface of jade, it brings out the stone's mesmerizing green hues. A polished cabochon cut enhances this effect. So in the right lighting conditions, jade can appear to glow brightly.

Second, some decorative jade objects are intentionally made to glow in the dark by adding phosphorescent compounds. Glow in the dark paints can be applied to carved jade sculptures or beaded jade jewelry. These paints absorb and store energy from normal light, then release it slowly in the dark creating an artificial glow.

The most common phosphorescent additive is zinc sulfide, which results in a greenish glow when charged by light. This method provides a novelty effect for pendants, bracelets, and figurines made of jade or jade simulants. However, naturally occurring jade does not have any chemical properties that make it luminescent.

The appearance of jade can also be misleading regarding its glow. Omphacite is a mineral variety that forms Glycyrrhiza omphacite, sometimes called "glowing jade." It displays bright green and blue flashes when moved under light. Nephrite jade can also exhibit a subtle glow effect from scattered inclusions of tremolite or actinolite minerals. But this reflective glow relies entirely on external light sources.

While a floating glowing jade amulet may seem supernatural, in reality pulsing or glowing jade is man-made. Natural jade exhibits a stunning luster but does not actually glow on its own accord in the dark. The stone's association with healing energy and bright fortune is symbolic, based on its meaning in Asian cultures, rather than any real luminescence.

So if you prize jade for its metaphysical attributes or simply its beauty, don't expect this gemstone to create its own glow after the lights go out. Jade's soft emerald shine comes from external illumination, not an internal radiance. But craftsmen can artificially make jade glow for a unique mystical effect. With the right lighting, jade's smooth glow will continue to entrance gemstone lovers.
