On the surface, it would seem obvious that petrified wood must be heavy since it has essentially turned to stone. In fact, petrified wood is denser and harder than normal dried wood. However, the weight of petrified wood can vary greatly depending on the type of minerals that have replaced the original wood compounds.
In most cases, petrified wood is heavier than regular wood, but not as heavy as pure stone. The minerals that typically replace wood include quartz, calcite, pyrite, and opal. Quartz and calcite have relatively low densities, so wood that has petrified into these minerals will be heavier than the original wood but not extremely heavy. Wood that has petrified into pyrite or opal will be much heavier, since these mineral compounds have higher densities.
The porosity and internal structure of the original wood also affects the weight of the resulting petrified wood. Wood with more pores and vessels, like oak or pine, will generally be lighter than the more dense woods of maple or mahogany when both are petrified. The replacement minerals can fill in pores to varying degrees, making some petrified wood more solid and heavy than other pieces.
In addition to the type of original wood and replacing minerals, the size of the petrified wood sample affects its weight. A small chip of petrified wood will be very light, while a large, solid tabletop slab will be quite heavy. The moisture content of the wood before petrification and the extent of mineral replacement also affect the final density and weight.
While a piece of petrified wood can often weigh more than a similarly sized piece of regular dry wood, it still retains some of the original wood's porous structure and is considerably lighter than a pure stone of quartz or another replacement mineral. Most petrified wood weighs about 50% to 200% more than the original wood, with particularly mineral-dense varities weighing up to 400% more. Compared to solid stone, petrified wood can be 20% to 60% less dense.
In the end, most petrified wood falls somewhere in between the lightness of dried wood and heaviness of pure stone. The increase in weight over natural wood varies based on the particular characteristics of the original wood and the mineralization process. So while petrified wood is undoubtedly heavier than the wood it derived from, it retains some of wood's porous nature and is considered light for a fossilized stone material.
