Prasiolite is a green variety of quartz that has sparked debate over whether it is a real natural stone or a manufactured gemstone. So is prasiolite real or is it fake? The answer is complicated.
In nature, prasiolite is a rare silicate mineral that forms when amethyst is heated naturally. It typically occurs in sites where amethyst deposits were subjected to natural heating events such as lava flows. This natural process causes the purple amethyst to change color to an olive green, creating a rare and valuable prasiolite. So natural prasiolite found in geologic settings is absolutely real.
However, the majority of prasiolite in the gemstone market is manufactured rather than natural. Most commercial prasiolite is produced by artificially heating amethyst or synthetic amethyst to transform it to a green color. This heat treatment process allows jewelers to convert abundant and affordable amethyst into the more valuable prasiolite gems.
So while naturally occurring prasiolite is real, most prasiolite is manufactured. The Federal Trade Commission requires sellers to disclose that prasiolite is "enhanced by heating" so consumers know what they are buying. Reputable gemological labs like GIA also test and disclose if a prasiolite is natural or lab-created.
With manufactured prasiolite, the question isn't really if it is "real" or not. The issue is disclosure. As long as the seller discloses the heated treatment, buyers understand the stone has been altered from its original natural amethyst state to produce its green color. So in that sense, commercially sold prasiolite is not "fake" because its heated enhancement is disclosed.
Consumers do need to watch for prasiolite sold as natural with no indication of heating. This is misrepresentation. Ideally, prasiolite should be accompanied by a lab report verifying if it is natural or enhanced. Overall, prasiolite enjoys market demand because people love the striking green color, even if it requires heat treatment to achieve it.
