Where Can Green Jasper Be Found?

Green jasper comes in a range of light to deep green shades, but where exactly can green jasper be found?

Some of the most notable deposits of green jasper are located in the United States, Russia, India, Australia, Brazil, and Egypt. In the U.S., significant sources of this stone have been found in Utah, Oregon, Wyoming, and California. The vivid emerald-colored jasper from eastern Oregon is especially prized.

Other American sources include Texas, Idaho, and Montana. Russia also contains abundant deposits of green jasper, particularly near Lake Baikal in Siberia where it occurs in a range of forest green to olive green colors. In India, high quality green jasper can be found in the Deccan Traps region.

Australia boasts large jasper deposits in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The ancient jasper found here takes on deep green hues. In Brazil, the state of Bahia contains rich jasper deposits, including the bright green variety. Egypt is another source, particularly near the Red Sea coast.

Green jasper also occurs in Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, and Namibia, though not in the same world-class quantities as the localities mentioned above. Rare types include the vivid chromium-rich green jasper from Zimbabwe as well as the translucent serpentine-rich green jasper from Austria and Kazakhstan.

Why does green jasper occur in these deposits? The green coloration comes from inclusions of various minerals within the base chalcedony quartz. This includes minerals like serpentine, chlorite, bowenite, dolomite, and celadonite. The variations in the type and amount of inclusions account for the range of different green shades.

Iron within the stone also plays a role in producing the green pigmentation. Weathering and the geological conditions in which the jasper formed millions of years ago are key factors determining its coloration. Heat and pressure over time altered the mineral composition to create the green jasper we prize today.

From jewelry to decorative objects and carvings, green jasper has been fashioned into beautiful artworks and functional items since prehistoric times. It remains a popular gemstone today due to its distinctive green shades and patterns. Knowing where in the world to find high-quality green jasper helps modern jewelers, collectors, and other enthusiasts obtain specimens from some of the most productive localities for this semiprecious gem.
