Where is Bloodstone Commonly Found?

Bloodstone often contains scattered red specks or flecks of red minerals mixed with the green stone. This gives bloodstone an appearance reminiscent of blood drops on a green surface, which is how it got its macabre name. But where is this unique stone most commonly found in nature?

India

One of the most significant sources of bloodstone is India. Certain regions of India produce bloodstone that is highly coveted for its vivid red specks contrasted against dark green. Indian bloodstone is also treasured for the metaphysical and healing properties ascribed to it in Indian culture. For many centuries, bloodstone from India has been used in rituals, ceremonies, jewelry, carvings, and more. Some of the most sought-after bloodstone on the market today comes from India.

Australia

Australia is another top source for high quality bloodstone. Deposits have been found in various parts of Australia, but the state of Victoria is especially well known for its bloodstone. Much of the bloodstone mined in Australia is exported to other countries, including the United States and India where it is popular for use in jewelry and carvings. The vivid red flecks common in Australian bloodstone make it valuable on the gemstone market.

United States

While not as renowned as Indian or Australian bloodstone, the United States does contain some deposits of this stone, most notably in California, Wyoming, and Oregon. The bloodstone found in the U.S. tends to be darker green with less vibrant red flecks compared to bloodstone from India and Australia. But American bloodstone is still used in jewelry, carvings, and metaphysical healing practices. Some believe that it's best to work with bloodstone that is local to you, so American bloodstone has an appeal for those living in the U.S.

Russia

Russia also produces some bloodstone, primarily from deposits in the Ural Mountains. Russian bloodstone falls somewhere between the very high quality stone from India and Australia and the darker American bloodstone in terms of the vibrancy of the red flecks. Russian bloodstone may also feature banding or stripes of red rather than flecks or spots.

China and the Middle East

Small deposits of bloodstone have also been found in China and in parts of the Middle East. However, these regions do not produce bloodstone on a large commercial scale. Most bloodstone sourced from China and the Middle East is used locally rather than exported overseas. The bloodstone found here comes in a range of qualities, some with vivid flecks and some darker like the American stone.

So, the top sources of high quality bloodstone with bright red flecks or spots include India and Australia. The U.S. produces some darker bloodstone that is still popular for jewelry and spiritual purposes. Russia also provides mid-range quality bloodstone. China and the Middle East contribute smaller quantities that are mostly used regionally. So when shopping for bloodstone, keep this source guide in mind and look for products made with stone from India, Australia or even the United States for the best quality bloodstone on the market.
